D(+)-Glucose serves as an energy source. Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine act as reducing agents, creating an anaerobic environment by lowering the oxidation-reduction potential. This environment supports the growth of anaerobes and prevents the accumulation of peroxides, which can be harmful to certain microorganisms.
