Some microorganisms reduce nitrate to nitrite, while others reduce nitrate to NH\u2083, N\u2082, etc. The reduction of nitrate to nitrite is detected by adding sulfanilic acid (reagent A) and N,N-dimethyl-1-naphthylamine (reagent B). Sulfanilic acid reacts with nitrite to form a diazonium salt, which then combines with N,N-dimethyl-1-naphthylamine to form a red-colored complex.
