In addition, the medium is also used for the enumeration of <em>Enterococci<\/em> in animal feed.<\/li>\n<li>The packaging with semi-permeable Cellophane film helps balance the humidity of the environment during storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>PRINCIPLES <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BacterPlate\u2122 Bile Esculin Agar (BEA)<\/strong> contains esculin, ferric citrate to provide ferric ions, and 4% oxbile to inhibit most other strains of nongroup D <em>streptococci<\/em>. Esculin is hydrolyzed by group D <em>streptococci<\/em> to form dextrose and esculetin. This compound reacts with the ferric ions contained within the medium, turning the medium from its original amber color to a dark brown to black.
