INTENDED USE
- BacterChromTM B. cereus is a selective and differential culture medium designed for the detection and enumeration of Bacillus cereus group bacteria in environmental and food samples. It is intended for use in food safety testing and environmental monitoring to identify contamination with toxin-producing Bacillus cereus.
- The packaging with semi-permeable Cellophane film helps balance the humidity of the environment during storage.
PRINCIPLES
- Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming bacterium commonly found in soil and various food products. It produces toxins that can cause two types of foodborne illnesses:
- Diarrheal illness: Associated with meat or vegetable-containing foods, occurring after long incubation periods (8 – 16 hours).
- Emetic illness: Associated with improperly stored cooked rice, occurring after short incubation periods (1 – 6 hours).
- This medium is formulated with selective agents to inhibit the growth of non-target organisms and chromogenic substrates for the differentiation of Bacillus cereus. The bacterium’s ability to hydrolyze specific substrates results in characteristic colony coloration, enabling rapid identification
