- Packaging: 10 plates/box or as per customer requirements.
- Storage Conditions: 2–8°C.
- Transportation: Ambient temperature.
- Shelf Life: 03 months from the date of manufacture.
INTENDED USE
- BacterChromTM VRE Agar is a selective and differential chromogenic medium, containing 6 mg/L of vancomycin, intended for use in the qualitative direct detection of vanA/vanB transmissible VRE-type gastrointestinal colonization with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis (VRE) to aid in the prevention and control of VRE in healthcare settings.
- The medium can also be used as an early warning indicator for diagnostic tests of infections to signal the possible presence of multi drug-resistant bacteria.
- BacterChromTM VRE Agar is not intended to diagnose VRE infection nor to guide nor monitor treatment for infections.
- The packaging with semi-permeable Cellophane film helps balance the humidity of the environment during storage.
PRINCIPLES
- BacterChromTM VRE Agar contains selective agents, including vancomycin, to inhibit the growth of vancomycin-susceptible organisms. Chromogenic substrates in the medium differentiate vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species:
- Pink colonies: Presumptive vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium or Enterococcus faecalis.
- No growth or other colors: Non-VRE organisms or susceptible strains.
- BacterChromTM VRE Agar can be used with the following specimens: Rectal swab and stools.
- Allow plates to reach room temperature before inoculation
- Streak the specimen directly onto the agar surface for isolation
- Incubate in aerobic conditions at 35 – 37 °C for 24 hours.
RESULTS
- Qualitative reading and interpretation of the plates:
Microoragnism | Typical colony appearance |
VRE. faecium; VRE. faecalis | pink to mauve |
VRE. gallinarum; VRE. casseliflavus | blue or inhibited |
Other Gram (+) bacteria | inhibited |
Gram (-) bacteria | inhibited |
Yeasts and mould | mostly inhibited |
BacterLab ensures the quality of each product batch by testing with ATCC reference strains.
Reference strains | Incubation conditions | Expected results |
VRE. faecalis ATCC 51575 | Incubate for 18 – 24 hours at 35 – 37 °C | Good growth |
E. faecalis ATCC 29212 | Inhibited, no growth
E. coli ATCC 35218 | Inhibited, no growth
S. aureus ATCC 25923 | Inhibited, no growth |
