BacterTube™ Pyruvate Broth
- The test medium is used to determine the organism’s ability to utilize the substrate pyruvate.

INTENDED USE
- BacterTube™ Pyruvate Broth is recommended for the differentiation of microorganisms based on pyruvate utilization.
PRINCIPLES
- The medium supports microbial differentiation through the following components:
- Sodium Pyruvate: Serves as the fermentable carbohydrate.
- Bromothymol Blue: An acid-base indicator that turns yellow when acid is produced during fermentation.
- Yeast Extract: Provide essential nutrients for growth.
- Diphosphate Buffer: Maintains pH stability throughout incubation
- Prior to inoculation, allow medium to equilibrate to room temperature.
- Inoculate with 2 – 3 colonies from a 18 – 24 hour culture.
- Incubate aerobically at 35ºC for up to 5 days.
- Examine daily for a yellow reaction.
RESULTS
- Pyruvate fermentation is indicated by the appearance of a yellow color in the broth within 5 days following inoculation.
- Negative result when the medium does not change color.
