- INTENDED USE
BacterTube™ Stuart Transport is a non-nutritive, semi-solid medium used to preserve and maintain the viability of Neisseria spp. and other fastidious organisms during transportation from the clinic to the laboratory.
- PRINCIPLES
BacterTube™ Stuart Transport maintains the viability of microorganisms without supporting their growth. It consists of sodium thioglycolate in order to keep, as much as possible, these microorganisms alive Multiplication-free environment for anaerobic bacteria. Methylene blue is the antioxidant/oxidant indicator. Agar provides a semi-solid matrix to immobilize the specimen which buffers also maintains a stable pH
- Use a sterile swab to collect the specimen (e.g., from urethra, cervix, rectum, throat, or conjunctiva).
- Insert the swab into the tube and snap the excess shaft.
- Securely close the cap of the transport tube.
- Send the specimen to the laboratory promptly.
- Upon arrival at the laboratory, use sterile forceps to remove the swab and inoculate appropriate culture media.
- Both the swab and the transport medium may be used for testing if necessary.
RESULTS
- The medium does not support microbial growth, so no visible changes such as turbidity should be expected.
- Upon arrival at the laboratory, the swab and the transport medium should be inoculated onto appropriate nutrient media for isolation and identification of microorganisms.
BacterLab ensures the quality of each product batch by testing with ATCC reference strains.
Reference strains | Incubation conditions | Expected results |
Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615 | 35 – 37°C, 18 – 24h | Good recovered on subculture |
Bacteroides fragilis ATCC 25285 | Good recovered on subculture | |
Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 | Good recovered on subculture |
