Viral Transport Medium
Viral Transport Medium (VTM) is a specialized medium used for transporting and preserving respiratory specimens for virus testing using PCR or Real-time PCR techniques.

Purpose:
- VTM is designed to transport and preserve respiratory specimens for virus testing using PCR or Real-time PCR techniques.
Principle:
- VTM is a nutrient medium containing Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) to prevent specimen desiccation and stabilize viruses. It also contains antibiotics (Gentamicin) and antifungals (Amphotericin B) to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth.
Note:
- Proper biosecurity measures must be followed during the transportation of specimens.
- Storage and Expiry.
- Storage: 2 – 25°C.
- Expiry: 12 months from the manufacturing date.
- Collect the specimen using a cotton swab and place it into the VTM medium.
- Break off any excess swab portion and securely tighten the tube cap.
- For fluid specimens from the throat, bronchoalveolar lavage, or pleural effusion.
- Mix the specimen with VTM at a ratio of 1:2.

- DMEM (Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium).
- BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin) fraction 7.5%.
- Kanamycin sulfate.
- Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride.
- NaHCO3 (Sodium Bicarbonate).
- HEPES.
- Amphotericin B.
- Other components.
- pH: 7.2.
