INTENDED USE
- BacterPlate™ Chocolate Agar with Gentamycin is a ready-to-use selective medium designed for the isolation and cultivation of fastidious Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Haemophilus and Neisseria species. The addition of gentamicin enhances selectivity by inhibiting the growth of contaminating bacteria, making it ideal for diagnostic workflows in clinical microbiology laboratories.
- The packaging with semi-permeable Cellophane film helps balance the humidity of the environment during storage.
PRINCIPLES
- BacterPlate™ Chocolate Agar with Gentamycin is formulated with:
- Defibrinated Blood: Heat-treated to release growth factors (hemin and NAD), essential for the growth of Haemophilus and Neisseria
- Gentamycin: Acts as a selective agent to inhibit unwanted bacterial contaminants.
- Enriched Nutrients: Supports the robust growth of target organisms.
- This combination promotes the selective recovery and reliable differentiation of fastidious pathogens, ensuring efficient and accurate diagnostic results.
- Allow the agar plates to reach room temperature. Dry the plates in an incubator by slightly opening the lid.
- Inoculate in order to obtain isolated colonies.
- Incubate at 35 – 37 °C, 5 – 10% CO2 for 18 – 24 hours in optimal conditions for the culture of the inoculated germs.
RESULTS
- After incubation for the required duration, observe the colonies growing on the surface of the plate for characteristic traits such as colony size, color, and morphology.
- Haemophilus influenzae: Smooth, greyish, translucent colonies.
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Small, shiny, grey colonies with a mucoid appearance.
- Identification of the isolated bacteria must be carried out through appropriate subsequent tests
