INTENDED USE
- BacterChrom™ Enterobacteria is a selective chromogenic medium designed for the detection, enumeration, and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae in food, environmental, and industrial samples. It is widely used in food safety testing and quality control, helping to identify contamination at various stages of the production process.
- This medium is intended for laboratory use and should be operated under appropriate conditions by trained personnel. It is not suitable for clinical diagnostic use.
- The packaging with semi-permeable Cellophane film helps balance the humidity of the environment during storage.
PRINCIPLES
- BacterChrom™ Enterobacteria utilizes chromogenic substrates that react with specific enzymatic activities of Enterobacteriaceae. These reactions result in distinct colony colors that allow for differentiation among species:
- Escherichia coli produces blue colonies, with or without a blue halo.
- Other Enterobacteriaceae appear pink to red.
- Non-target Gram-positive bacteria are inhibited, while most other Gram-negative bacteria are suppressed.
- The selective agents incorporated in the medium ensure specificity by suppressing non-target organisms, allowing for clear and accurate identification
- Allow to warm to room temperature before inoculation, dry the plates in an incubator with the covers partially removed.
- Direct streaking sample onto the plate
- Incubate in aerobic conditions at 37°C for 24 hours. If searching for psychotropic Enterobacteriaceae, incubate at 30°C
RESULTS
- Qualitative reading and interpretation of the plates:
Microorganism | Typical colony apprearance |
E. coli | blue with or without blue halo |
Proteus | red with swarming |
Other Enterobacteriaceae | pink to red |
Gram (+) bacteria | inhibited |
Other Gram (-) bacteria | mostly inhibited |
BacterLab ensures the quality of each product batch by testing with ATCC reference strains.
Reference strains | Incubation conditions | Expected results |
K. pneumoniae NCTC 13442 | Incubate for 24 hours at 35 – 37 °C | Pink colonies |
E. coli ATCC 35218 | Inhibited
E. faecalis ATCC 29212 | Inhibited
P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 | Blue colonies |
